Late... but finished

I finished these yesterday, so I was a day late in getting to 52, but I did get there. These last two pair, 51 and 52 are knit for CIC. Knit in left over wool.

I have enjoyed this knit along and have loved seeing and being inspired by all the great socks.

Well, I don't think that I've posted in months, and I'm sad to say that I lost momentum very early on in the KAL, but it was a nice time in my first KAL. I get bored doing the same project over and over, and I love to move on in my challenges. Perhaps this is why I dropped out. On the other hand, I joined my first KAL, I learned how to knit socks from the toe-up, I'm less tentative about joining the online community, and I know my limits of how much I can knit. For instance, I cannot knit 52 pairs of socks in a year...mostly because no one really wanted any and I don't need that many socks :)

Congrats to all who stuck it out, and good luck to any of you who are moving on to do the 52PP 08-09.

So, I didn't make it to 52 pairs of socks in a year, but I am very well proud of finishing 34.These are some of my favourites.

Here are pairs 32 (again) and 33.

Pair 32 looks different from the original photo because I found that one sock was longer than the other. since I already had pair 33 on the needles, I adjusted and got two pairs in the right sizes.

I had fun doing this. I learned a couple of new techniques like knitting a sock on two circular needles and later, knitting two socks on two circular needles. I might have been able to get more socks knitted, but I can't ride a bike and knit at the same time. Plus I knit two sweaters for the baby and a couple of hats, and worked on afghan blocks for charity, and taught a couple of friends to crochet and another to knit.

Good luck to everyone and maybe we'll meet again. I'm not sure if I'll sign up in June, but who knows.

Pattern: A variation on Mingus Sock by Cookie A. I'm calling them Dufus Minsug Socks.

I actually knit this pair before knitting the real Mingus socks. Dufus Minsug socks are what you get when you don’t bother reading the Mingus pattern’s instructions and just jump right in to the charted stitch pattern. I like them in an off-kilter kind of way, but decided to go ahead and knit another another pair of real Mingus socks (see the real Mingus socks above)

I wasn't going to count the next two pairs as I have other pairs in progress that are much more interesting. But events have conspired against me today and I'll be unable to get the others done. In the interest of getting a complete set of 52 pairs posted, here they are...

The cable patterns on the legs of these socks don't match. I'd done the original one following the Inside Out pattern. When I found that it wasn't stretchy enough to fit over my incredibly high instep and heel I used a different cable for the leg of sock two. So, although they look like a pair, they don't quite match. Some day (but not tonight) I'll re-knit the leg of sock one.

Well, folks, we've had a good run, but it is drawing to a close (less than 10 hours!!)...
I can hardly believe it's been a year... indeed, for me, it's been about 6 months (my computer was stolen in October so I'm posting hastily--and against policy--from my workplace)...

CONGRATULATIONS!
to those of you who have met and/or exceeded your own expectations...
and a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of those who were up to giving the challenge your all.

I must admit, I finished far short of the goal. I lost a lot of enthusiasm when 1 1/2 socks and 17 pairs-worth of yarn were stolen (in the theft mentioned above). Yes, I know, WHO steals sock yarn?! I think it was a grab-and-go kind of deal --> they took 3 of my bags (computer bag, purse, and woven hobo sack), how did they know what was in the third one! Normally, I would give it another go, but I'm ready for more of a variety in my knitting...

Here's the rub:
I did have fun facilitating the 52PP... so let your friends know that there will be a 52PP 08-09 beginning on 1 June 2008! Sign-ups will end 31 May 2008.

Here is my last pair for the plunge. Started March 14, finished the 31st. Vanilla socks knit with Fabel sock yarn, 60sts on 2.25mm needles, heel over 30sts, toe to 20sts.

It was fun! At least I surpassed my personal goal of 26 pairs. Would have been nice to hit the 52 mark, but 29 will have to do!

I am leaving the "Charge of the Sock Brigade" contest open for a few more days. Come up with alternative stanzas to the ones I did or help finish the poem and win some sock yarn. Just drop your contribution in the comments section.

Looking back over this last year, I knit socks for just about everyone in the family and certainly replenished my own sock shelf. I found that the trusted and true patterns suited me better than many of the sock club challenges or complicated patterns.

I love warm feet and I want my socks to last a long time (I have several pair, worn regularly which are over 10 years old). But when I can't see all the patterns and hard work once they are on my feet, then I am happy with fancy colours or simple pattern stitches to keep me entertained during the knit.

Summary -
52 pairs of adult socks. All but three pairs were completely started and finished within the year, the other three had less than 1/2 a sock started and had been in the UFO pile for over two years. Since I really needed the needles....

I hope that everyone had as much fun as I.

I am going out with a crazy picture...I made these for my mom who loves them. It was an on-line yarn, I forget the color...size 1.5 needles, plain vanilla pattern. I finished these the last week of 2007.

I cannot believe that a whole year has gone by...thank you so much for starting this KAL! it was fun, though it made me realize that I cannot knit a pair of socks every week for a year, since I also make a lot of other things. I made half that number, and didn't even post all of them here.

I am sort of hoping there will be some kind of continuation of this...it was so great to see all the different socks that people were cranking out.

If this will be closed, well, I had fun! Thanks again.

My final count is 38 pairs of socks. I have four pairs on the needles right now, but they will not be finished before April 1, 2008. This was a fun challenge. I regret that I did not have more time to devote to it. There are lots of warm toes out there wearing my socks so all is not lost. I will keep tracking my sock knitting on my 52 pair plunge blog until I have knit 52 pairs of socks - whenever that may be.

Number 30 is done. Knit in Wisdom Yarns Los Angeles colorway. This is the Twin Rib pattern, 66 stitches on US1 dpn's. They match pretty closely even though there were two breaks in the yarn in the second sock. It's been a fun challenge (even though I didn't hit the goal). Congrats to those who did.

Meet the Zombies - from Round One of Sock Madness.

Knit of merino/nylon sock yarn in colourway "Black & Blue" there were 64 stitches knit top down on 2,00 bamboo needles.
Started evening 13 March, finished 1330, 15 March - today_

A bit darker in relief, the drop stitches strike this nice balance between gaping holes and bits of flesh falling off (grin).

Only one pair to go. I am trying to decide - do I crank them off to have be done? Or do I do something spectacular for the last pair?

Moving right along. I finished both of these this weekend. The pink ones are knit in yarn I dyed a couple years ago. I think I may have enough of this dyed to make a baby sweater. The pattern is the Triple Twist pattern but I did a short row heel instead of a heel flap.

I'm not going to get to 52 pairs unless the socks get very small. This pair is some Opal superwash sock yarn in a 75% wool/25% polyamide blend. The label's mostly in German. I got the part about machine washable, no dryer. They're for the baby's two-year old male cousin. I've got another pair on the needles in the same yarn for another little boy, the son of a co-worker.

I have finished 2 more pair this week. The first pair is knit in Opal Uni I am not sure the color number but it is a medium denim color. The pattern is Cable Galore It is pretty dark and gloomy out today so I couldn't get good pictures.

The second pair is knit in Pagewood Farms 3 ply Glacier Bay yarn in the Navajo color. This is a heavier yarn, much like Jitterbug, and comes in a huge hank. It is lovely to work with.

Now, I am off to knit more.

I like the pattern detail, just busy enough to be entertaining, but rapid to knit.

The Rose Bamboo socks are complete. They are a semi-matching pair with one sock being 5/1 rib and the other a 5/1 slip stitch. The heel is slip rib.

Knit on 2,00 mm needles out of a marled looking rose bamboo mix sock yarn from Opal (Zwerger).

I got away from those devils, who have been holding me captive, and not permitting me to knit! Actually, I started cleaning up my studio, and quilting projects, and got lots of those things cleared away, and not much knitting. But, I am back on track. Pictured above is a pair of Regia Crazy Colors knit on US size 3's, with the Water Loose socks Feather and Fan Pattern. I'll have to check my journal, but I think this is pair 33. I didn't even attempt to make them match, just started knitting with the yarn as it came from the skein. Funny, I didn't notice how the pattern lined up as I took the picture. This pair was donated to the YWCA Salute to Women, and will be going to their new home on Tuesday of next week. My friend, Paula Baitinger, is being saluted for her volunteerism.

This pair, in all their lively color, was claimed by my daughter-in-law. I finished them while we were in Virginia over Christmas, and photographed them on the desk in our hotel room. I must have liked this colorway, because I ordered it on three different occasions, and then seeing it "live", I almost went YUCK! They are much prettier from a distance!

Have another Monkey on the needles in a Merino yarn, and a basic pair in Opal 6-ply. I found a neat little make-up bag that is my current favorite sock project carrier. It is clear plastic, rather squarish, with a zippered compartment in the top where markers, tape measure, yarn needle, crochet hook, and other tools can easily reside. The bottom has my pattern and it holds the whole bulky 6-play skein, and sock in progress without having to squeeze it in. I'll post a picture with the next completed pair in my run. Don't think I'll make the 52, because I'm also trying to finish a quilt for my Guild's show in early April, but I have surely enjoyed the run!

Excel is a scary tool

No new pictures of socks, but I just finished doing some 52-pair plunge estimates in excel. I've finished 33 pairs and have a number of pairs in various states of incompletitude. Assuming that my guesses for the amount of knitting left to do on the partially complete pairs are somewhat reasonable, I'll need to knit 0.565714286 socks per day (on average) for the next 5 weeks. That should be doable, right? Unless I look at the fact that to date I've been knitting an average of 0.259876543 socks per day.

Aw, who cares about the numbers. All I've got to do is double my output. Maybe I should go back to caffeinated coffee :-)

Knit from Fleece Artist Merino, these are a relatively easy slip stitch pattern.

Had no idea that the Trekking XXL Art Yarn was going to be so loud. Perhaps this was why the sale's price was so cheap?

Knit out of JaWoll Cotton, I love the look and feel, but really, really, really still don't like knitting cotton. The pattern is an 8 row, with alternating locations of eyelets.

Bernat Baby yarn - made for Amelie. Large enough to fit her chubby calves with eyelets in case I need ti tie them on. They match a hat I made for her.

Socks for the Oldest One. Regia Mini Ringel of some breed, and Kroy Norfolk Blue for the top, heels, and toes. The rings should have really ended with another set of the brighter green, but I didn't think I'd have enough yarn to do so, thus the reason for so much blue at the toe. (And of course I think there was enough to end like I wanted to!) Started January 26, finished February 1. More pics and info here.

When is the last Day to submit our 52 socks? I don't think I am going to make it as I seem to be enjoying life these days instead of being a good sockaholic. I've gotten so relaxed I forgot to take a picture of the socks I gave to a friend. Pair #29 was the leftovers of my Opal banana socks, size 5 in Eleanor pattern. #30 is the New Years Sockamania pattern

pair #31 is just boring pair of socks that seemed to cause a lot of trouble... but it is what my friend wanted! See you next month.

I finished up last year with 38/52 pairs knit, most of which were completed prior to August. Then I went to China, came back to get interested in knitting a couple of cardigans, took a cruise (three pairs of socks plus one sweater start to finish). Returning home, I found I was relocating to the UK in the next four weeks.

So naturally, I started another sweater - go figure.

But I am now sort of settled in Camberley and have this

sitting on a side table in my living room.

It is the balance of the yarn I need to plow through. And perhaps a couple of extra skeins since I don't always count really well.

Since the picture last week, I am back on line (no internet x 2 weeks - try it - you won't like it!)

I have finished pair #39

out of Opal. The pattern is Arch-Shaped Socks by Jen (reference on Ravelry)and they are one of the best fitting pairs I have ever knit.

Pair #40

A pair of blue ribbed boot socks out of College Hill Yarn (aged probably years in my stash)

and Pair # 41

and a pair of miss-matched socks that you can see started in that baggie at the top of the box.

Since Blogger has decided not to let me upload any more pictures, the final ones are just links over from my own server.

I will add pictures of #41 along with #42 in the next couple of days as soon as I finish the toe on the second.

I finished a pair of Kroy Crayon Jacquard vanilla socks. They are just the plain old 60sts on 2.25mm needles, heel over 30sts, toe to 20sts thing. I started them on January 4, finished January 18. Worked on-and-off on them since I had a couple of other things to do, too.

Next up is a pair of gift Austermanns. The occasion is next Friday. If I can't get them done in time I'll have to give one with an IOU for the other! (I've done it before!)

... I think I can ... actually complete 52 pair. I was really begining to worry. But now that I have less than 20 left to go it doesn't seem so impossible. I have finished pair 34 and 35.

The Mountain Color Bearfoot in the Firestorm color are a 4 x 2 rib knit on size 1 needles and 60 stitches. And the green/purple.gold pair are Great Adirondack Soxie in the Kenya color. 68 stitches and size 1 dpns. I have 2 more pair close to being finished. I really admire all the sock knitting that has been going on here.

I finished up the child socks needed for Sunday's birthday party last night. Started January 9th, finished the 10th. Made with one skein of Regia Cotton Jacquard. They are a touch long for the Littlest One, so they should be fine or the same for the intended recipient. He'll be six, but he and the Littlest One are the same size even though there is 364 days difference in the ages. I'd rather give them a bit big than be too small.

Christmas socks

I knitted socks for every member of my family (small family, my moms side) for Christmas. All but one pair were finished in time, and since last week they were all finished. These are pairs 17 to 22 for this KAL. I won't make the total, but I keep knitting!

Two more pair finished and 2 more very close to being done.

Pair 32 is a pair that I actually started about a year ago. I finished the first one and never started the second one. They are knit in Opal Fish and are a simple 3 x 1 rib with a plain stockinette stitch foot.

Pair 33 is Zig then Zag but with a short row heel rather than a heel flap. The yarn is Stone Barn Fibers in the Lamurple colorway.

Just finished these last night. Pair 31. They are knit in Yarn Love yarn I don't remember the name of the colorway. Just a simple 3 x 1 rib on the leg and a stockinette stitch foot. This was a huge hank of yarn, I have plenty left to knit some baby socks or a pair of fingerless mitts.

I have finished 2 more pair. Yay!!!! I am up to 30 now and working on #31 ...(32, 33, 34, and 35...) I have a lot of single socks laying about. The first pair is Cool Breeze knit in Classic Elite Alpaca Sox in the Baby Blues color.

And the second pair is a cable pattern knit in Spritely Goods in the Peppercorn color.

I just tallied them up. In this past year, I have knit 45 pairs of socks - 38 of which count toward the 52 pair plunge.

The most recent pair was for my son. He has rather large feet, so it pleases me that he doesn't like really long sock tops. Knit on 2,5mm needles over 76 stitches, the pattern is a simple 6/2 rib.

But the whole collection can be found here rather than have me bore you with the last few pairs.

It is now dark out on New Year's Eve and the fireworks have already started.

Pair 20 of 52, I finished these Austermann Step socks in color 13 for my Dad last night at 11:55! So they were technically finished on his birthday, but he's away working and won't be home til today sometime. They are plain vanilla socks made a bit bigger with an eye of partridge heel. I had to take the toes back out of them after the first sock of each pair since he has Fred Flintstone feet ( very rectangular) He loves them!!! The first pair is knit in Lang Jawoll in color 82 and the second is in Jaeger Matchmaker Merino 4 ply in Sage.

I finished pair #27 yesterday, just in time for Christmas. I knit these for my son (C.J.). They are knit in Cascade 220 Superwash - Black. He likes short socks (thank goodness). I knit a 2 x 2 rib for 1-1/2" and the feet plain (for 10"). Merry Christmas!!

I haven't kept my needles going too efficiently lately, but I've made a little progress. Pair #30 is the ever popular Monkey, done in a Regia Stretch on US 2's. They will be a Christmas gift for my son's MIL.

Another six-ply pair. Pattern is a feather and fan by Randy Knudsen, Waterloose Socks. I used US size 3's and an On-line Supersock Winter in greens.

Bringing up the rear, is another pair of Socktopia Eleanor's in On-line Sunset Color, Tequila Lime Sunset in US 2's . . . I must have liked this colorway a lot, because I bought it on four separate occasions! I like the photograph very well, and even the sock, from a slight distance, but the dark color you see is a charcoal with rust, and it doesn't seem to blend very well up close. Still, I love the pattern, and I'm sure someone will enjoy them . . . or I'll have 4 pairs of them myself! I expect to finish the mate tomorrow.

We'll be having Christmas with my eldest son and his family. Should be a blast! Best of the holidays to all, and maybe we will all be reinvigorated once all this hub-bub is behind us!

Finished pair 19 of 52 -- they are work socks for my step-FIL for Christmas. I had actually made him one pair already with the Briggs & Little Tuffy (80% wool, 20% nylon) using their Heavy Sock pattern in what I thought was Smoke. Apparently I had a brain lapse and had gotten Oatmeal. So the second pair I bought Oatmeal, thinking I was making a pair in a different color. As I was knitting I was thinking, "Gee, this looks the same as the first pair."

(He'll love them anyways. He's always asking me to make him wool socks.)

Well looks like I am over the half way mark... a huff and a puff... I am behind but I am still making progress with the size 11 socks. This pair is from the interweave book Favorite Socks, Mock Cable. Check the pattern before starting, but once it is going the sock is done in no time. Or was that because of the yarn, Lorna`s Lace Camoflouge size #2 needles. Hope to post a picture next week!

What's more, as my recent inventory of sock yarn revealed, I probably have the yarn to knit them! (Count was adequate yarn to make 104 pairs!) Knit Picks Swish DK in Winter - I love this yarn. The socks were knit on size 4 Harmony needles so they were a fast knit. I will have to throw a few more pairs of these in if I want to reach the 52 pair goal!!
